It takes three to Tango

Across the world, people are fascinated by the melancholic and passionate tango. The unique project IT TAKES THREE TO TANGO combines tango cultures from all over the world: south, north, east and west.

The tango was born in Argentina and Uruguay in the 19th century as a cultural fusion between European immigrants, descendants of African slaves, and the local population of Rio de la Plata. Traveling musicians and dancers brought the tango to Europe at the beginning of the 20th century. In some countries it became a popular genre all its own. European composers began writing tangos, too. In each country, the tango acquired a distinctive flavour of its own. In Finland, tango was influenced by Finnish folk music and rhythms almost akin to that of a march, while in Turkey the rhythms followed ballroom tango and the songs were performed by operette singers.

In IT TAKES THREE TO TANGO, the Argentine tango meets its sisters from Finland and Turkey. Beatriz Aguiar (Uruguay), Katja Maria (Finland), and Meral Ari (Turkey) are vibrant performers with backgrounds ranging from South-American folklore, Salsa, Nordic folk music and folk-pop, to Jazz, Turkish kanto and cabaret.
