Iceland Airwaves Festival 2008

Reykjavik, IJsland

In de derde week van oktober vindt jaarlijks in Reykjavík het Iceland Airwaves Festival plaats, van woensdag tot en met zondag richt de zuidwestkust van IJsland zich op nieuwe muziek uit IJsland en een aantal internationale toppers.

Ooit begonnen in 1999 in een hangaar op Reykjavík Airport, nu een festival waar honderden muziekliefhebbers de wereld voor afreizen. Het is dan ook niet raar dat het de ondertitel "the hippest long weekend on the annual music-festival calendar" heeft gekregen door het muziektijdschrift Rolling Stone.

Bands als The Bravery, Sparta, Flaming Lips, Fatboy Slim, TV on the Radio, Keane, Architecture in Helsinki, Klaxons, Kaiser Chiefs en locale helden als Sigur Rós, Cynic Guru, GusGus en Singapore Sling stonden er reeds en ook dit jaar heeft het een indrukwekkende line-up.

IJsland is de afgelopen weken erg veel in het nieuws geweest. Het land zou economisch op de rand van de afgrond staan en duizenden Nederlandse spaarders zaten een week in spanning wat er met hun tegoeden bij Icesave zou gebeuren. Volgens berichten in de media waren pinautomaten buiten werking gesteld en zou het....
